Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Filmed in Budapest, Hungary.

Actress Cailee Spaeny had a recent interview where she revealed that the film takes place between the original Alien and Aliens. Here’s what she said: “It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie. They brought the same team from ‘Aliens,’ the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.” (11/28/23)

Director Fede Alvarez revealed in a recent interview that he submitted his cut of the movie to Ridley Scott to get his opinion on it. Scott is known to be very critical and honest, so Fede was expecting the worst, but Scott reportedly thought it was great. Here’s what Fede had to say: “I wanted him to see it before anybody. And everyone gave me the head’s up that Ridley is really tough. He’s really tough, particularly if it has something to do with his movies. He was really tough on ‘Blade Runner [2049],’ which I thought was a masterpiece, and he had issues with it because it’s really hard for him because it’s his work…I asked him about the new ‘Top Gun’ and he’s like ‘meh.’ I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And he was like, ‘My brother’s was original and this is like eh.’ He really respected it, but you could see how tough he was. So I was like, ‘There’s no way I win this one.'” Adding… “Even if he didn’t ask for it, I was gonna go there and sit at a table and look at him and get it. Even if he was gonna say, ‘You destroyed my legacy,’ I wanted to be in front of him and see him in the eye. And then he walks into the room and he did say, ‘Fede, what can I say? It’s fucking great’ For me, it was like… My family knows it was one of the best moments of my life to have a master like him, whom I admired so much, to even watch a movie I made, but particularly something like this… and talk to me for an hour about what he liked about it. One of the best compliments he said was, ‘The dialogue is great. Are you the writer?’ Yes!” (10/18/23)

Fede Alvarez has reportedly turned in a script to the studio recently, with the hopes of an early 2023 production start. Meanwhile, Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim: Uprising, Bad Times at the El Royale, The Craft: Legacy) is rumored to be starring in the film. (11/16/22)

It’s said that this movie is “intended to be made for Hulu as part of 20th Century’s ambitions to make more than 10 movies a year for the Disney-owned streaming service.” By ultimately releasing it on Hulu the studio said the following: “It’s not a film that has to be all things to all people with those gargantuan budgets. They get to be authentically what they are. And this is closer to its genre roots.” Indicating that the filmmakers would have more freedom with the movie and not be limited to editing certain aspects to appease certain theatrical considerations. (3/4/22)

The title “Alien” will likely change as the project progresses, but there is a rumored title at the moment: Alien: Romulus.

This movie will reportedly have no connection with the previous films.

Ridley Scott produces via his Scott Free banner.

Written/directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead remake, Don’t Breathe) who is apparently a huge fan of the franchise and reportedly pitched a take on a new movie to producer Ridley Scott many years ago. “The idea remained implanted in Scott’s brain until late last year when he called Alvarez out of the blue and asked him if the younger filmmaker was still up for it. Alvarez didn’t have to be asked twice.” Studio 20th Century is said to have picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch,” which was quoted as “just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.”

No relation to the Alien 5 film that was to be written and directed by Neill Blomkamp. That project remains in development hell.

This is said to be a “standalone” Alien movie that’s set in the same universe.
