Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Actor Willem Dafoe recently spoke briefly about his role in the film, saying: “I haven’t seen any footage yet, but it was fun to do. I play a police officer in the afterlife, so I’m a dead person. And in life I was a B-movie action star, but I had an accident and that’s what sent me to the other side. But because of my skills, I became a detective character in the afterlife. So that’s my job. But it’s colored by the fact of who I was [when I was alive]: a B movie action star.” (11/27/23)

Now that the actor’s strike is resolved production on the film is set to resume soon. It reportedly only has a couple shoot days remaining before it’s done and ready to move into post-production. (11/9/23)

According to a recent interview with Tim Burton, filming for the movie was only days away from completing when production had to be put on hold due to the writers/actor’s strike. He was quoted saying: “I feel grateful we got what we got. Literally, it was a day and a half. We know what we have to do. It is 99 per cent done.” Burton hopes to finish once the strikes are resolved. (9/11/23)

Also known as Beetlejuice 2.

Filmed in London.

Willem Dafoe is said to be playing a “law enforcement officer in the afterlife.”

Monica Bellucci is said to be playing Beetlejuice’s wife.

Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara are all returning.

Scripted by Mike Vukadinovich (Rememory, Runaways, Kidding).

Composer Danny Elfman spoke briefly about his return to the world of Beetlejuice, saying: “I’ll be doing that in a couple of months, as you may know, on another Tim Burton project. That is very exciting, to return to that world.” He goes on to comment on Keaton’s return to the project, saying: “Really, after all these years? Michael Keaton? I said, ‘He’s not even going to look that much different. That’s the beauty of the Beetlejuice makeup. He already looked like he was 150 in the first one.’ It’s perfect, you know? Everybody else has to play the next generation, except for Michael. I mean, he’s still like really fit and really active and really on it. And with the Beetlejuice makeup, I can’t even imagine it’s going to look like he’s changed practically at all. So, I can’t wait for that.” (5/3/23)

Scripted by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (duo behind hit shows such as Smallville, Into the Badlands and Wednesday.)

Jenna Ortega (Scream, X, Wednesday, Scream VI) is rumored to be circling a role in the film. If proven true, she would play the daughter of Lydia (Winona Ryder in the original). Tim Burton is said to be directing, with Michael Keaton expected to return, as well as Winona Ryder, but nothing official has been revealed just yet. Filming is aimed to begin sometime late May or early June in London, but the “budget has not been set, resulting in a back and forth.” (3/10/23)

A sequel has been talked about for decades, with first rumblings in the early 90’s when original director Tim Burton hired Jonathan Gems (Mars Attacks!) to script the sequel. Titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, the story saw “the Deetz family moving to Hawaii, where Charles is developing a resort. They soon discover that his company is building on the burial ground of an ancient Hawaiian Kahuna. The spirit comes back from the afterlife to cause trouble, and Betelgeuse becomes a hero by winning a surf contest with magic.” Apparently, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder were interested in reprising their roles, but only if Tim Burton returned as director. Eventually Tim became too involved with Batman Returns and things fell through. However, as the years went on his interest in the project never faded, and the script went through several rewrites from various other people, but by the late 90’s Tim and the studio had pretty much given up on it moving forward.

This is a sequel to 1988’s Beetlejuice, which was directed by Tim Burton and starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton.
