Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023)

Five Nights at Freddy’s follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.

The film will hit theaters and be released on Peacock on the same day.

Filmed in New Orleans.

Matthew Lillard plays “William Afton, the co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment Inc. which owns the restaurant chain.”

It looks like the project is finally moving forward after all these years, with news that Emma Tammi (The Wind) will direct. A production start is aimed to begin sometime in February 2023. As stated in a previous update, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop will be handling the animatronic work. Producer Jason  Blum was quoted saying: “Five Nights at Freddy’s is more consistently asked about than any other film I’ve ever worked on, and I’m thrilled to confirm it’s finally happening! With Emma Tammi at the helm, we’re committed to making Scott’s vision of the movie come to life. Rest assured, it will be and is worth the wait.” FNAF creator Scott Cawthon was quoted saying: “In meeting with Emma, I felt she had a great understanding of the franchise, and really felt that she could craft something that would please the fanbase and keep people on the edge of their seats.” (10/5/22)

Producer Jason Blum offered a brief update via social media recently, revealing that he’s working with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to bring Freddy and his pals to life. Here’s what he had to say: “It’s great to be working with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Their experience and expertise with animatronics is absolutely killer!” So it looks like the project is still in development for moment. (8/9/22)

Producer Jason Blum offered an update on the project recently, revealing that Chris Columbus is no longer directing, but fails to say whether they have a new director attached. He goes on to detail why it has taken so long for the project to move forward, saying: “We’ve written multiple scripts, and we’ve got where we’re threading a needle, which is doing justice to Five Nights at Freddy’s and making Scott (Cawthon) happy. The only way that we would go about it is giving Scott … I don’t want to do something that Scott doesn’t like. Let me say that a different way. I don’t have the right to do anything Scott doesn’t like. Basically, Scott has kind of like the equivalent of ‘final cut’ and it’s taken longer than I hoped to get the right story.” Adding.. “We’re a long way from giving up. And I’m confident eventually I will figure it out.” This contradicts the last update where Scott Cawthon seemed to praise the recent script and even revealed a Spring 2021 production start, which obviously never happened and possibly indicates there still being problems with the script. According to co-writer and franchise creator Scott Cawthon, the filmmakers finally found the right script and are moving forward with it. Scott recently posted on Reddit about the update and also revealed the various scripts it took to get to the right one. He describes the scripts as “a good mix… it has the best pieces from all the previous screenplays… All the right characters, all the right motivations, all the right stakes…” Adding… “It’s fun, it’s scary, and it has a great central story!” He goes on to reveal that filming is slated to begin Spring 2021. Gil Kenan is apparently a big fan of the games and wants Scott Cawthon (game creator) to be heavily involved in the development process. Apparently the story will offer some of the game’s lore, while also veering into it’s own thing. Kenan was quoted saying: “the lore of the game is the movie’s fuel. I’m making this film for ALL the FNAF fans, not just kids.”

It’s said that the film will try to avoid the use of CGI and mostly use practical effects and animatronics created by the Jim Henson Creature Shop. On the practical Gil Kenan was quoted saying: “I want this to be crazy practical – that’s what makes animatronics so unnerving – they’re REAL.”

Game creator Scott Cawthon had this to say about the project: “The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to.”

The studio will apparently be working with game creator Scott Cawthon on the project.
