Malum (2023)

Malum is a bold and expanded reimagining of the 2014 horror cult classic, LAST SHIFT. On a search to uncover the mysterious circumstances surrounding her father’s death, a newly appointed police officer, Jessica Loren, is assigned to the last shift in a decommissioned police station where a notoriously vicious cult saw their demise years prior. The lone officer at the station, she soon finds herself barraged by terrifying paranormal events and, in the process, is taken on a journey during which she learns the shocking truth behind her family’s entanglement with a demented cult leader.

Director Anthony DiBlasi was quoted saying: “With this new film, we really wanted it to stand on its own, and giving it a new title absolutely does that. The name ‘Malum’ is not only a major element of the plot and how things unfold, but that word, in some of the oldest languages in history, means ‘evil’ and ‘an offense against right or law,’ which seamlessly ties into the twisted, horrific themes of the film. Once audiences see the movie, they won’t soon forget the name ‘Malum’.” Meanwhile, one of the producers was also quoted saying: “From day one, the goal was always to produce something that paid homage to the original but broke new ground in a much bigger way, making it feel less like a remake and more like a reimagining. From a scale and scope perspective, this film is a much meaner, larger beast. From a horror perspective, it cranks the intensity up to eleven, which we think fans will love.” (2/16/23)

One of the film’s producers was quoted saying: “This time around, the world is larger, the characters and mythology are richer, and the scares are cranked up to eleven, featuring masterful SFX makeup by Russell FX, and stunning cinematography by Sean McDaniel.”

Director Anthony DiBlasi (Cassadaga, Last Shift, Most Likely to Die, Extremity) returns to helm this remake. He was quoted saying: “The world [co-writer] Scott and I envisioned for this story was always meant to be a dark, twisted rollercoaster through Hell, and partnering with Welcome Villain allowed us to fully realize our vision without the limitations we faced with the original film. The practical effects, authentic locations, incredible cast and unwavering support from team Villain propelled this project to an entirely new level that we hope will more than satisfy existing fans and new fans alike.”

It’s said that “this reimagining takes the premise of the 2014 festival hit and flips it on its head, thrusting viewers into a relentless, adrenaline-fueled, bloody cult nightmare.”

This is a remake of the 2014 movie Last Shift.
