About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.
Star Lukas Gage had a recent interview where he revealed that production has wrapped and also spoke a bit about the movie, saying: “I just wrapped. We finished in upstate New York. It’s gonna be really good. I’m really excited for everyone to see that one. Doing a lot of sequels, it feels like, this year. The year of the sequel. I hope you like it. Parker Finn, the director of that, it was crazy how much he knows this genre of movies and how he was able to recreate it and make it fresh. It was such a cool formula to follow. How did nobody think to do that creepy smile face? My smile face is so good.” (3/11/24)
In a December 2022 interview with writer/director Parker Finn, the filmmaker revealed how he would approach a sequel, saying: “I do think that there is still a lot of interesting stuff to explore in the world of Smile. There certainly are stones that I left unturned by design. And then there are other things that I, at one point or another, wanted to put in the movie, but they didn’t end up in the movie for whatever reason. So those things are still exciting to me, but if there’s more to be done with Smile, I would never want to just repeat myself or retread the same ground. I’d want to make sure that there’s a new, exciting, fresh way into it that the audience isn’t anticipating. I also want to find some new ways to scare them and unnerve them. But as far as how it may connect to the first one, if we were to do it, I’d want that to be surprising as well.”
Kyle Gallner returns as “Joel.”
This project is apparently part of a multi-year deal with writer/director Parker Finn and Paramount Pictures, where he will write, produce and direct new original horror features for the studio.
This is a sequel to 2022’s surprise hit Smile, which had a worldwide theatrical gross of over $217-million, on a budget of only $17-million. The movie was originally going to debut on Paramount+ until a positive test screening showed the studio that the movie may actually do well in theaters instead. The rest is history.
