Actor Ray Liotta was originally cast in the film back in February 2022. Sadly, he died in May that year before he could film any scenes. He would ultimately be replaced by Dennis Quaid.

Mubi released The Substance in Theaters in the US, UK, Latin America, Germany, Canada and Netherlands on September 20, 2024.
Metropolitan Filmexport releases The Substance in French Cinemas on November 6, 2024.
