The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)

AKA The Conjuring 3

The movie reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.

News broke today that many of WB's films will be released on HBO Max, as well as theaters on the same date. This is part of a new deal the studio has for 2021 that will apply to many of their big films that will be released through the year. While the films will be available on HBO Max and theaters on the same date, they will only remain on HBO Max for 31 days then they will be removed from the platform and only be available in theaters until they naturally run their course. There's no word when they will reappear on HBO Max. (12/3/20)
Originally had a September 11th, 2020 theatrical release until it was pushed until next year due to the pandemic. (7/20/20)
Actor Patrick Wilson spoke briefly about the film, saying: "I knew going into it that James had a real strong hand in the story and script, and I talked to him a lot about it. Then, once I met [director] Michael Chaves, his energy, his skillset and his passion for it was really infectious. I knew that he was gonna take the reins, both with great respect, but still as its own passion. The process was fantastic, and it’s a much different feel. It’s still the same bones; it’s still very much Ed and Lorraine. Again, we are pushing our characters to places they haven’t gone, but the film will be a really nice addition because it’s definitely a different beast. Pun intended. It was exciting; it was really, really exciting." (11/18/19)
On the topic of the film, actress Vera Farmiga was quoted saying: “Conjuring 3 will be a doozy. It will be big. So for me, visiting these characters [in Annabelle Comes Home], it’s like practicing your scales and doing a few arpeggios before having to dive deep into the next one. Because the next one is massive."
Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona) is set to direct.
Producer Peter Safran gave a brief update on the project, stating that production will likely begin next year. Here's what he had to say: "It's actually coming along great. David Lindsay Johnson is working on the screenplay, and I feel pretty confident they will have that one up and running next year." (9/11/18)
James Wan has been quoted stating that the film will likely take place sometime in the 1980s.
Producer Peter Safran was once quoted saying that the film would avoid the "supernatural possession in a house with a family in peril" formula again.
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson return as Lorraine and Ed Warren.
David Leslie Johnson (Orphan, Conjuring 2) returns to co-write the script.
James Wan returns to co-write and produce, but will not direct this time. However, it's said he'll remain closely involved as a producer, via his Atomic Monster production company, and act as a godfather on the feature.
This is the third film in the popular Conjuring franchise.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is currently set to be released in theaters and on HBO Max on June 4, 2021.
